League of Women Voters

ABOUT US

The League of Women Voters of Richardson received its charter in 1962. We encourage informed and active participation in government, work to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influence public policy through education and advocacy. We educate voters about the issues and candidates in local elections by sponsoring candidate forums and producing nonpartisan Voter Guides.  We also conduct voter registration drives and produce a Guide to Elected Officials.

The Richardson League studies solutions to public policy issues and strives to come to consensus. Issues such as land use, education, public health services, and the city charter have been studied. Many improvements have been championed over the years including:

  • Unified polling places

  • Richardson's inclusion in the Dallas Area Rapid Transit Rail System

  • Better regulation of child care facilities

  • Implementation of citywide recycling

  • Expansion of public parks

  • Televising city council meetings

  • Raising the ratio of nursing and counseling staff to students in public schools

  • Helping families enroll in the Child Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

OUR MISSION AND ROLES

The League of Women Voters of Richardson is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We are nonpartisan, meaning that we never support or oppose any political party or candidate. We encourage informed and active participation in government, work to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influence public policy through education and advocacy.

The League of Women Voters has two separate and distinct roles.

  • Voter Service/Citizen Education: we present unbiased nonpartisan information about elections, the voting process, and issues.

  • Action/Advocacy: we are also nonpartisan, but, after study, we use our positions to advocate for or against particular policies in the public interest.
