Candidate Forums

FORUM VIDEOS

As an election approaches, the League of Women Voters of Richardson decides whether or not to hold candidate forums for races. Sometimes our forums are cosponsored by other local Leagues and/or by local organizations. The candidate forums provide an opportunity for candidates to participate in a question-and-answer session before delivering closing remarks.

RECORDING POLICY

Statement on Policy Concerning Recording of Candidate Forums - March 31, 2011

The League of Women Voters of Richardson (LWV-R) provides the public with unedited videotapes of our candidate forums. We show the forums in their entirety, whether on the Internet or public access television.

To ensure that information is not manipulated to create false or misleading impressions, LWV-R has a longstanding policy of not allowing the public to record candidate forums. This policy is based on guidance from both the League of Women Voters of the United States and the League of Women Voters of Texas.

It has come to our attention that the Texas Open Meetings Act might be interpreted as applying to some candidate forums, in which case the policy of not allowing the recording of those forums might be in conflict with provisions of the Act. Following investigation with several government entities, the matter is still unclear.

Thus, until further information is obtained, the League of Women Voters of Richardson will suspend its policy of not allowing public recording of candidate forums.

We will continue to videotape our forums and make the complete, unedited video available to the public.

CANDIDATE FORUM PROCESS

The goal of the League of Women Voters of Richardson (LWV-R) in conducting candidate forums is to provide information directly from the candidates about their positions on a variety of issues, so that voters can make an informed, responsible choice when voting. This article is an attempt to explain the process LWV-R uses to plan and conduct its forums.
